It is a curated online e-commerce marketplace that helps sustainable fashion lovers from around the world to discover and shop the latest emerging sustainable brands. Our current target market is globally distributed and as such, the business is well-positioned to spread the risk of recession in individual markets.
This is a startup business that has been developed to the stage where it is off the ground and launched around a year ago. This is a relocatable business that can be operated from anywhere in the world and a great opportunity for anyone that recognizes the potential for such an online business in the times of COVID and beyond.
It works similarly to sites like Etsy — our platform works as a venue where transactions take place between customers and sellers (sustainable fashion brands). We hold no inventory so we have less overheads. Our brands list their products on our site and when a sale is completed, payment is split between the brand and our business (we take a commission on sales). This commission split happens automatically at checkout through an API with our credit card payment processor Stripe. After the completed checkout process, the brands themselves take responsibility for shipping to the customer and any returns etc. The business’ commission is currently set at 10% but there is scope to review this — other fashion platforms like Farfetch and the Iconic work on a 50% commission so brands are comfortable with a higher rate.
Building an online marketplace is an enormous undertaking. The technical development side of our business alone took over two years to complete. In this section, we will outline the current position it is in. The website has been developed as a multivendor e-commerce platform which allows users to apply to sell on the website and when approved, list and sell items on the site. We have created a custom integration with Shopify so that our brands can import products from their existing Shopify web stores. The site is currently translated into a variety of different languages using the Weglot service that again uses geo IP recognition. Our website has Google Tag Manager installed with tags for Facebook, Google Universal Analytics and Full Story for real-time screen recording of customer behaviour. We currently have 56 brands from all across the globe - from the UK, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Bali, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, United States, Mexico, Lithuania, Egypt, Sweden, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
We have social media channels set up and branded for Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. Along with advertising accounts set up for Instagram and Facebook. Our store inventory is linked to our Facebook and Instagram accounts so that followers can shop from our social media. Our Instagram account at the time of writing has 3,366 followers. Our Facebook has 123 followers so can be built on. Our Pinterest account has 4.9k monthly views.
